Why you need new friends

I’ve had the same group of friends for over 25 years. We’ve seen each other through the good and the bad. Although I’ve always considered this a blessing, someone recently pointed out how important it is to expand your circle. Being around family and lifelong friends might feel safe but it’s actually keeping you stuck. Let me explain.

The first reason you need new friends is because it’s important to step out of your comfort zone. If you only surround yourself with people who live similar lives, you will never grow. I know what you’re thinking: making friends as an adult is HARD! Although stepping out of your comfort zone might feel terrifying, once you start doing it, you will realize that it’s not as scary as you thought.

The second reason is that the people in your life are keeping you stuck in old versions of yourself. They have labeled you by your past and it has become your “personality”. Have you ever wanted to try something new and all of a sudden the people in your life look at you like you’ve lost your mind? There is nothing wrong with wanting to discover new passions or hobbies. But, it can be very discouraging when people remind you that YOU don’t do things like that. A simple comment like that from a loved one might seem insignificant but if you choose to believe it, you will never step out of your comfort zone.

The third reason is because it’s good for your physical and mental health. Making new friends reduces stress, anxiety and depression. Discovering things that bring you joy will increase your sense of purpose and self-worth. We are not meant to live in isolation. Humans need community. A great way to meet new people is by going to new places. Try a new workout class, a new restaurant, join a book club, start a walking group, volunteer. There are a lot of options both in person and online. Now go out there and make a new friend. You will be amazed how good it feels to discover new things about yourself and those around you.

In conclusion, no matter how scary it might feel, you should make some new friends. Social media and the internet in general has been a blessing and a curse to our social lives. The internet has made it so much easier to keep in touch with people all over the world. You can email, text, dm, call and even facetime anyone with just the click of a button. You can find your future spouse, your long lost family or your next best friend with a quick search. So regardless how disconnected you feel from society, just know that with a little effort, you can find your people! Whether you choose to use the internet or actually start smiling and talking to strangers, you will discover that we are all craving more genuine connections.
